It’s hard to imagine that in such desolated and remote places are wineries with internationally award-winning wines . Nor we will never know if this was the intention of those visionaries’ settlers who introduced their first vines over three hundred years ago…
What we do know for certain is that costed a lot of effort, both human and economic, to undertake this project. Both formerly and nowadays.
To get to Bodega Colomé we have to travel a long high mountain road, ascending up to 11,154 feet high. Unexpected landscapes, covered with giant cacti, snowy mountain ranges and colorful formations open their way to the small valley of Colomé.
“To get to Colomé it is necessary to strive, and to be able to enjoy the pieces of art located at the estancia, there is no other way than committing yourself”. This is what Mr. Donald Hess, owner of Colomé, told the famous artist James Turrell referring to the museum that after some time has been built especially for his works of art, but would he have also referred to his own wines? Our visit to Colomé
To Colomé we will dedicate the whole day, as there is so much to be done…
Upon arrival, we will start with a visit to the winery followed by a tasting by its sommelier, who will introduce us to (and help to discover and enjoy) the elegant Colomé Torrontés and Malbec de Altura. Then we continue with a tasting of premium wines from the cellar.
At the end of the tasting, we can have lunch on the terrace enjoying the incredible views of the valley and the vineyards. After lunch Colomé offers a visit to its museum dedicated to James Turrell, an unforgettable and unexpected show.
Our opinion
For us, Bodega Colomé is the perfect synthesis of tradition, experience, innovation and precision. With modern techniques, along with the best technology and a highly demanding team, it produces wines of a unique character.
They fully explode the potential of the different grape varieties of their own production into their winemaking process, reaching wines that exceed our expectations year after year; such is the case of the Colomé Torrontés, the Colomé Estate and its Special Lots.
Colome Awards
Among the many important distinctions received, the Wine Spectator selected the Colomé Estate Malbec for three consecutive harvests as “the best Argentine wine”. In addition, the 2004 vintage was included by this publication and by the British critic Jancis Robinson among the 100 best wines in the world.
For its part, the 2011 vintage was awarded the Gold Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2013 and it was included at the selection of the critic and British Master of Wine, Jancis Robinson who with his team, selected the best wines of the autumn season in Europe: Autumn Collection, dedicating one of its nineteen chapters to Argentina and Uruguay.
The wines of Hess Family, with its wineries Amalaya and Colomé, were highlighted in the ranking of The Wine Advocate, published by Robert Parker, one of the most recognized wine critics worldwide.
The Wine Advocate is characterized by having a hard and very critical view, so much that it underestimates the quality of the wines rather than overestimate it. For all this, Hess Family is more than proud of the scores obtained – ranging between 90 and 97 points –
On the second day of the program, after having enjoyed Colomé, we can discover a bit more of the region visiting Cachi, a charming colonial village located one hour away. In Cachi we will have enough time to explore the town, have lunch or a little coffee in the square and continue our journey to Salta.
A road to remember
On the way back we will cross the Cardones National Park and descend the Cuesta del Obispo. In the afternoon we will arrive to the city of Salta where we will conclude our program Experience Bodega Colomé.
